2026 Disability Awareness Session – Birchip P-12

Rhonda Allan, Project Officer with Mallee Sports Assembly – Wycheproof, conducted an engaging Disability Awareness session for Year 7, 8 and 9 students at Birchip P-12 School.
The program is designed to help able-bodied students develop a greater understanding of disability, the challenges some people face in everyday life, and the importance of creating inclusive communities. The highly interactive session incorporated a range of practical activities that encouraged empathy, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Following the activities, students returned to the classroom to discuss the barriers faced by people with disabilities and the importance of accessible environments.
Real-life stories showcasing the achievements of people with disabilities were also shared, reinforcing the message that ability should always be the focus rather than limitation.
Mallee Sports Assembly extends its thanks to staff members Rylee Smith and Mia, as well as the students of Birchip P-12 School, for their enthusiastic participation and support throughout the session.
These sessions help young people better understand the experiences of people living with disability and encourage them to think about how they can contribute to creating more inclusive schools, clubs, and communities. The students were highly engaged and showed great empathy and willingness to support one another throughout the activities.” Rhonda Allan – Mallee Sports Assembly
